ACZM Traditional Short Courses

We are pleased to announce that the 2015 ACZM Short Course will be taking place 1 -5 June 2015 at Lincoln Park Zoo.


Speakers will include: Dr. Kathryn C. Gamble, Dr. Yvonne Nadler, Dr. Shannon Ferrell, Dr. Marion Desmarchelier, Dr. Sathya Chinnadurai, Dr. Amanda Guthrie, Dr. Allison Tuttle, Allen LaPointe, Dr. Jean Pare, Dr. Karen Terio, Dr. Mark Drew, and Dr. Randy Junge.  


The five-day didactic course provides intensive topic review in zoological medicine including:  pharmacology; taxonomy (aquatics, herptiles, birds, mammals); water quality; imaging; pathology; free-ranging wildlife and zoological sentinel case review; anesthesia; non-human primate viral disease; captive marine mammal disease; and invertebrates – aquatic and terrestrial.   ACZM and board-certified specialists will be team-teaching the course.  It is designed to assist participants’ preparations for ACZM examination.  It includes lectures, discussions on studying, test taking strategies, and mock examinations.


Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with ACZM exam committee members and fellow participants  regarding the examination. Presenters will discuss their study strategies and provide digital copies of their presentation materials. No written notes will be available, but participants will receive a flash drive with the presented  materials.
Attendees who are flying should plan to arrive the evening of 31 May 2015 and should not schedule departing flights any earlier than 8 pm on 5 June. Short course location is best accessed from either Midway or O’Hare International Airport. Please note that airfare is not covered in course registration fee.


For participants, the Chicago Getaway Hostel is located at 616 West Arlington Place, Chicago, IL 60614, which a short walk to the zoo. The hostel provides a number of free amenities including computer stations, free wi-fi, continental breakfast, and a self-service kitchen.
Once we confirm your registration, you will receive a confirmation email that will allow you to book the meeting  rates at the hostel.  If you would prefer a list of local hotel options, those can be provided with confirmed registration for the short course.



Pre-registration is required for the short course. All people attending any portion of the course must register for the entire course; there is no single day registration. The short course is subject to cancellation unless 20 persons register  to cover the costs of the program.

Registration will open on 1 February 2015 and close 1 May 2015. Register early to help prevent course cancellation and ensure housing as the meeting is during summer.


The registration fee is $700. For your convenience, 24 hour a day registration is available via the ACZM website (credit card payment required). Make sure that you include your email address during the online registration. A confirmation email will be sent with additional information. If you are unable to register via the website, please contact George Prevolos ( for alternative registration options.


Cancellations & Refunds:

If registration cancellation is made on or before 5 pm 15 May 2015 a refund of 80%of registration fee will be given. We are unable to refund fees for non-attendance or cancellation after 15 May 2015. If the course is cancelled, full refund will be given. If the registrant is unable to attend, we encourage an alter  [GAP1]I noticnate to be appointed in their place in lieu of cancellation.
